George Corley Wallace Jr. was born on August 25, 1919, in Clio, Alabama. A lawyer and state judge, Wallace became one of the most prominent segregationist politicians of the civil-rights era. He was elected governor of Alabama in 1962 and gained national attention for defending racial segregation and resisting federally ordered integration, including his symbolic confrontation at the University of Alabama in 1963. Wallace later sought the presidency several times and won five states as the American Independent Party candidate in 1968, campaigning on themes that combined opposition to desegregation with populist criticism of federal institutions and social change.
