Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi was born on March 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, into a politically active family. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., served in Congress and as mayor of Baltimore. Pelosi graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., and became active in Democratic Party organization after moving to California. She won a special election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987 and has represented San Francisco-area districts ever since. Pelosi became House Democratic whip, minority leader, and in 2007 the first woman elected Speaker of the House. She served as Speaker from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Her leadership encompassed major legislation involving health care, financial regulation, economic stimulus, infrastructure, climate policy, and federal spending. She also played central roles in congressional investigations and two impeachments of Donald Trump. Pelosi left Democratic leadership after the 2022 elections but continued serving in Congress.
