Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He spent portions of his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia, later attending Occidental College, Columbia University, and Harvard Law School. After work as a community organizer in Chicago, Obama practiced law, taught constitutional law, and served in the Illinois State Senate. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 and won the presidency in 2008, becoming the first African American elected president of the United States. Obama served two terms, from 2009 to 2017.
