Last U.S. Ground Combat Unit Leaves South Vietnam
U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War had peaked with over 500,000 troops in the late 1960s before gradual withdrawals under the Nixon administration's Vietnamization policy. The Third Battalion, 21st Infantry, part of the 196th Infantry Brigade, had been guarding the Da Nang air base. On August 11, 1972, this unit was deactivated and departed, marking the formal end of American ground combat operations in South Vietnam.
