Robert E. Lee Born at Stratford Hall
Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford Hall in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He entered the United States Military Academy in 1825 and graduated second in his class without receiving a demerit. Lee served for more than three decades in the U.S. Army as an engineer, cavalry officer, Mexican-American War veteran, and superintendent of West Point. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, Lee resigned his U.S. Army commission and entered Confederate service despite having opposed secession beforehand. He became commander of the Army of Northern Virginia in 1862 and led major campaigns including the Seven Days Battles, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.
