John Adams was born on October 30, 1735. He was the second president of the United States and a leading advocate of American independence. Born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, Adams graduated from Harvard College and became a prominent lawyer. He defended British soldiers after the Boston Massacre, served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, and nominated George Washington as commander-in-chief. Adams helped draft the Declaration of Independence, negotiated the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War, and served as the first U.S. minister to Britain.
