Scott Raymond Adams was born on June 8, 1957, in Windham, New York. He earned a degree in economics from Hartwick College and later an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. Adams worked in corporate positions at Crocker National Bank and Pacific Bell while developing the office satire that became the comic strip Dilbert. Launched nationally in 1989, Dilbert depicted engineers, managers, meetings, bureaucracy, and workplace absurdities and grew into one of the best-known newspaper comic strips of the 1990s and 2000s. Adams also wrote numerous books about business, persuasion, self-improvement, and his personal philosophy of systems and goals. In later years he became an increasingly controversial political commentator, and many newspapers dropped Dilbert in 2023 after remarks widely condemned as racist. Adams continued publishing online until his death from cancer on January 13, 2026.
