Summary

Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois. After graduating from Eureka College, he worked as a radio sports announcer before moving to California and beginning a film career. Reagan appeared in dozens of motion pictures, served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and later became a television host and spokesman for General Electric. His increasingly conservative political views led to a successful campaign for governor of California in 1966. Reagan served two terms as governor and won the presidency in 1980. As the fortieth president from 1981 to 1989, he pursued tax reductions, deregulation, increased defense spending, conservative judicial appointments, and a confrontational but later increasingly diplomatic relationship with the Soviet Union. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and won reelection in a landslide in 1984. Reagan remained an influential figure in Republican politics long after leaving office.

Why It Matters

Reagan reshaped the modern Republican Party around lower taxes, conservative social policy, deregulation, stronger defense spending, and a more explicitly ideological approach to government. His presidency coincided with major changes in the Cold War and helped establish a durable conservative political coalition. Debates over his economic policies, foreign policy, federal spending, and response to social issues continue to influence assessments of late twentieth-century American politics.
