Joseph Gardner Swift was born on December 31, 1783, on Nantucket, Massachusetts. Appointed a military cadet during the administration of John Adams, Swift became the first graduate of the newly established United States Military Academy at West Point in 1802. He pursued a career as a military engineer and rose rapidly through the Army's engineering establishment. In 1812, Swift became chief engineer of the United States Army and also served as superintendent of the Military Academy. During the War of 1812, he worked on defensive fortifications and served with American forces during operations along the Canadian frontier. After resigning from the Army in 1818, Swift served as surveyor of the Port of New York and later worked as a civil engineer on railroad and harbor projects. His career bridged military engineering, early professional technical education, coastal defense, and the growth of civilian infrastructure in the early United States.
