James Clerk Maxwell was born on June 13, 1831, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Educated at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge, Maxwell became one of the nineteenth century's most influential mathematical physicists. His best-known achievement was the mathematical theory of electromagnetism that unified electricity, magnetism, and light within a common framework. The equations associated with his name showed that changing electric and magnetic fields could propagate as waves and that visible light was an electromagnetic phenomenon. Maxwell also made important contributions to statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, color vision, optics, and the study of Saturn's rings. His theoretical work on gases helped establish relationships among microscopic molecular motion and observable properties such as temperature and pressure. Maxwell held academic posts at Aberdeen, King's College London, and Cambridge, where he became the first Cavendish Professor of Physics and helped establish the Cavendish Laboratory.

Maxwell's electromagnetic theory unified previously separate areas of physics and predicted electromagnetic waves, providing foundations later used in radio, electronics, telecommunications, and relativity.
